The anti-IgE antibody prevents the antibody from attaching to effector cells by selectively binding circulating free IgE at the high-affinity receptor binding site. Upon binding to free IgE, tiny complexes are created. IgE complexes are either hexamers, weighing around 1,000 kD, or trimers, weighing about 490-530 kD. The relative concentrations of serum-free IgE and anti-IgE antibodies determine the size of complexes. This means that the anti-IgE antibody is nonanaphylactogenic—it does not result in effector cell degranulation or cross-linking of the IgE receptor.
